With that said, vapers ultimately go to TC vaping due to various benefits. But like all things in vaping, you should approach it with care and safety in mind.

What is TC Vaping?

Temperature vaping refers the technology wherein you are able to manage the temperature of your coils while vaping. In order to achieve TC vaping, you need two elements in your set-up: nickel wire in your coil and a temperature control device. These two elements will work together so when the coils are heated beyond the set temperature, the device will reduce or even power off to protect the coils and prevent dry hits.

If you’re wondering, there is no temperature monitoring device such as a thermostat in a TC set up. What happens when you TC vape is that the device detects temperature that goes beyond your desired limit. If and when that happens, the device is programmed to cut or reduce power.

How Does TC Vaping Work?

Every metal has an inherent resistance. In the case of nickel wire, the device detects that there’s a change in resistance at a set rate or amount. This makes it easy for your mod to reduce or cut off power upon reaching the temperature limit.

Consider TC vaping as similar to cruise control in your car. No matter what road you take, your mileage will remain the same no matter what. This is also true to TC vaping. Whether you like direct lung hits, mouth-to-lung or whichever vaping style, the temperature of your coils will remain within the limit no matter what.

Now, TC vaping works by allowing you to vape at a set temperature. If you’d like to vape just up to X-degree Celsius/Fahrenheit, you’ll continue to do so until the device detects that you’re approaching the target temperature. When it does, it automatically tries to bring the temperature down so that you don’t burn your coils or suffer from dry hits. It’s like giving your device a signal that your device is heating up almost to the set limit and it needs to cool down first to deliver you optimum vaping experience.

Difference Between TC Vaping vs. Regular Vaping

Temperature control has earned its special place in the vaping niche because of the type of vaping experience it provides. It’s a newer technology compared to regular VW vaping, but it rose to fame quite quickly. But how does TC vaping and regular vaping compare to one another?

In regulated mod vaping, you basically vape with a device which you can set how much wattage the battery delivers to your atomizer. Once you set a definite wattage the device will keep delivering the same amount of power all throughout until you change the wattage.

In this set up, kanthal wire is used to build into coils. Kanthal is less resistant to changes in wattage, making it the ideal choice for this type of vaping. Kanthal coils will keep delivering the same current no matter how often or fast you press the firing button. In short, you get consistent vaping experience unless you decide to change the wattage.

What happens then to the coils is that it delivers the set current to the atomizer on all your draws. If you chain vape, you’ll notice your device heating up quickly and juice running out. It’s also likely to experience dry hits at some point. Furthermore, your battery can run out quickly because of the constant and consistent strain you put into them.

On the other hand, temperature control vaping allows you to set the maximum temperature your device should reach before it tries to reduce power or shut down. Even if you vape fast and often, you’ll experience a cooler vaping device because it tries to manage its own temperature.

Remember that temperature in most vaping devices climbs in 5-10F degrees. Keep on vaping on a temperature control vape and when it reaches the maximum temperature, it will try to cool down reducing the amount of power set to your atomizer. This way, you don’t burn your wicks, protect and lengthen the life of your coils as well as help preserve battery life.

No More Dry Hits

Cons of TC Vaping


Although the cost for TC devices have gone down over the years, they’re still relatively more expensive than regular vapes. Fortunately, the cost is compensated by the fact that you don’t have to replace the coils, wicks and batteries as often.

Lesser Clouds

If you’re looking for big fluffy clouds, TC vaping is certainly not for you. Due to the program and components of your TC set-up, you will produce lesser vapor than desired. It is therefore not the most suitable device for cloud-chasing and sub-ohm vaping.

More Difficult to Build Coils

Nickel is more delicate than Kanthal. If you’re building your own coil, you might find it difficult to wrap the nickel wire and obtain the level of resistance suitable for TC vaping. Additionally, you need to be more careful and precise when wrapping up the nickel wire and make sure that they are spaced evenly and that they’re fitted properly. This can be challenging since Nickel is soft and delicate, but achievable given some patience.

Setting Up for TC Vaping

If you’ve decided to try your hand out with TC vaping, you need to gather a few things first to develop your TC set-up.


Your wire of choice is very crucial for temperature control vaping. Kanthal wires are dominantly popular for regular vaping because they’re fairly static no matter how much temperature you apply when you vape. Therefore, when you do variable wattage vaping, you’ll notice that the wires will get hotter as you vape because the temperature never changes and the coils are simply putting up with it. When you continue do this, your e-liquid could soon get overcooked, producing those nasty dry hits.

The most recommended wires for TC vaping are Nickel, stainless steel and titanium simply because they have low temperature coefficient of resistance or TCR. TCR refers to the amount of resistance a material has for a given temperature. Nickel, in particular, is a great and popular choice.

Do take note that when working with nickel to build coils, you will need more wraps (sometimes thrice) than those with Kanthal coils to generate the same resistance. The more number of wraps you do with the nickel wire, the slower it conducts electricity and the better equipped your device is in managing temperature.

Temperature Control Mod

The next important consideration is a temperature control mod. You cannot build a TC device without both a nickel coil and TC mod and you cannot shortchange one of them with any other unfitting alternative.


Fortunately, a lot of mods nowadays have a TC feature, making it easier for you to build your own TC device. You just want to make sure that it has TC capability, otherwise, don’t risk it.

A lot of atomizers nowadays can easily be used in your TC device. You can even use your sub-ohm tank with nickel replacement coils. Or if you’d like to use an RBA, make sure that you pick nickel to build coils with.

The great thing about TC vaping is that you have the freedom and joy to do that too, and still reap the benefits of TC vaping. You just need to be extra careful, as you would with any vaping-related activity, to ensure that you’re safe from day one.

TC Vaping Safety Tips

There are a number of things you need to keep in mind to continually enjoy TC vaping and yes, most of them are related to your own safety.

  • Never use mods that don’t have a temperature control feature.
  • Never use any other kind of wire unsuitable for TC vaping. Your best options are nickel, stainless steel and titanium.
  • You must know how to measure resistances and do a little math. You cannot just take chances when it comes to serious things like TC vaping.
  • Start low when setting your maximum target temperature. The recommended temperature for first time TC vapers is 420F degrees.

Additionally, setting up a TC device is simpler than you expected. Simply get a mod with a TC feature, screw in a TC suitable wire like nickel and set your desired maximum temperature. The rest is virtually figured out.
